music: A.R . RAHMAN
lyrics: sri VETURI SUNDHARAM MURTHY
direction: MANI RATNAM
released: 14th feb 1992 ( wat a splendid gift for lovers)
I feel soo lucky that i ve born in rahman era... i pity the coming generations [;)] ..
rahman came with this glorious music when indian music was tending to go out of the track..
ROJA is officially rahman's first album, though his music for albums like "colors" n jingles were released before ROJA but went unnoticable.. but soon rahman became popular all his albums , even a one minute music of his compositions became popular all over the world..
Many had misconceptions that rahman was chosed by mani ratnam due to a conflict btw he n ilayaraja... but tat was not the fact ... the moment happened when maniratnam accidentally met rahman through ilayaraja... seeing his interest and all his works till then.. he jus asked him to compose a tune on some political conflict issue which was then on rages in karnataka.... soon in minutes rahman composed a tune n presented it to the director.. he was impressed and signed him for 6 songs in his upcoming movie ROJA.. the tune which he presented before maniratnam was later became one of the patriotic song in this album titled" bharath hum ko jaan se pyaara hain"... hmmm
lets get into each song firstly
1)"rukumani rukmani": sung by S.P balasubramanyam , K.S chitra
guys as soon as u listen these words "rukumani rukumani" the obvious tune comes into mind.. a perfect folk song for the first time in indian music .. some of the lyrics were made to sound like old women singing to fit for the situation ( such is the importance given for the situation .. kudos for both director and musician).. song starts with slow pace and it takes ur senses rouse at 00:41 min one best thing v can observe in rahman way of music .. first the lyric comes. a instrument plays.. in the back ground and count my words .. tat single instrument will carry on in the back ground till the end note.. really mysterious . composition hence became ACADEMY AWARD winner for the year 2009... and coming back to the song at 3:25 to 3:50 really robbed every dancers heart till date...
telugu version 5 stars , hindi version 3 stars ( not familiar with other linguals)
2)"chinni chinni asa" : sung by minmini , AR Rahman
The song which broked the language barriers .. rahman gave a new meaning .. " music has no language" song was written on a sixteen year gal in a village who is ambitious , peppy, funky, senti.. daring yet feels shy .. a typical traditional gal... "roja" the protagonist in the movie.. rahman's first singing debut .. listen the song at 3:19. its maestro.. singing for a boat man between valleys .. wat a splendid camera work thanks to PC SHRI RAM (photography)
"my hug to him" .... the way the venna used in this song makes u speech less .. sooo modern yet classical touch.. ( rahman my hug to you toooo)... perfect time to listen this song early morning around 7... this song became a base to every musician while composing a song for heroine intro... the lyrics, the voice of the singer, the photography, n madhubala.. perfect choice.. of maniratnam
telugu : 5 stars ,hindi : 4 stars
3)" na cheli rojave": sung by SP balasubramaniyam , sujatha, hindi: hariharan , chitra
wat shall i express about this song its still haunting me every day.. the flute music at 1:25.. is the wind soo soothing wen it comes out of a hurted flute?? "want to born as a flute in rahman's band in next life" the magical lyrics in this song.. "gaali nannu takina ninnu taku gnapakam" n " manasu leka pote manishi dandaga anta nevu lekapote brautuku dandaganta" simple to spell yet has a immense possesive love.. ( veturi ...sir.. my hug to you).. i have to mention about phtography once again.. aravind samy sitting at the arch design with sunrays falling inside.. the whole frame makes me involved in the mood.. perfect blend of classical ragas and perfectionists in his band.. especially the flute and sujatha the female voice
telugu: 5 stars , hindi : 5 stars
4)" paruvam vaanaga": the music of glass pieces at 00:12 min ... listen in a apple ipod ( any model) the life time experience.. the ipod technology has come in 20th century but still this technology matches rahmans compositions which were done in 19th century.. soooooooo advanced compositions .. rahman uses apple's magic for his compositions in present period.. every composer now a days uses this music composing tool.. but roja was just done on ordinary instruments with out any digital mixings.. still the tunes are unbeatable.. in telugu version the music at 00:10 oscillates from left ear to right ear when listened in ipod's and in hindi version it oscillates from right to left i know this is a useless recognition and have a little complaints when compared with hindi version .. the song is soooo crystal clear in hindi but where as the sound mixing quality was neglected in telugu version... the reason i think is .. the movie released in hindi later after becoming popular in south.. hence much interest and higher production values made it sound so..
telugu version: 4stars , hindi version: 4 stars
5) vinara vinara:" sung by mano
best patriotic song from indian film industry...
as a mentioned before this was the song first presented b4 mani ratnam and .. was kept in the title rolls at the end of the movie. this song became more popular as the kargil war was on peak on those days... a national award was expected for lyrics. but went unnoticed but stil the best song played in the background by media in tv wen terrorism attacks our mother land.. a angry filled composition.. a tear filled lyrics... thanks to rahman for this wonderful song.....
This album is soon gonna come in english version as rahman fans grew in western countries .. only music will be remaked
my day ends with this review... more yet to come keep visiting.. all above mentioned were solely me personal opinions..
